- northern tip of north peninsula of Nfld

- first discovered in 1960, H.Ingstad

- 8 turf-walled structures, including 3 large dwellings, several out-buildings

- construction style similar to Norse in Greenland and Iceland

- artifacts: iron rivets (from ships), bronze pin, and other Norse specimens

- site midden deposits: thin, suggesting occupation by 30-40 people for only few years

-         so the Norse landed before Columbus, but they didn=t stay long

- scattering of artifacts in Thule settlements in Eastern Arctic
