- ENG285H1F: The English language in the world. (Crystal, Jenkins). The
class will meet in Lash Miller 158.
- ENG6362H1F: History and structure of the English language II
(Nevalainen, Beal). The class will meet in Innis College room 312.
Courses for 2006-7
- ENG 6365H1F (Diasporic Englishes). The textbook is Jennifer Jenkins'
World Englishes. I have also just added Concert of voices:
an anthology of world writing in English (Broadview). Additional
readings will be assigned on the first day of class. If you're keen, check

- ENG 367Y1Y (History of the English language). There are two textbooks:
David Crystal's Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English language
second edition, and a textbook/workbook bundle for Algeo and Pyles
Origins and development of the English language and Problems in
the origins and development of... If you're keen, check out the course website.
ENG305H1S (Swift, Pope, and their contemporaries). Textbooks have now been
ordered to the U of T Bookstore on College Street, and will be available
at the beginning of January. There will also be a modest coursepack, cost
about two dollars. If you're feeling ambitious, you can read
Gulliver's Travels or a biography of Swift or Pope over the
break to get ahead on the reading.

We'll be using Caribbean literature to exemplify broader questions of
language and power. This is an introductory course, though: I'm not
expecting you to have previous knowledge of either Caribbean literature or
