TEMPO Programme 2011 – 2012

Regular Sunday workshops are held from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m.

Please note our new location:
Armour Heights Community Centre at 2140 Avenue Road, immediately southwest of Wilson Avenue. The entrance to the parking lot is off Avenue Road. It is accessible via TTC: subway to York Mills Station, then either Bus 96 (Wilson Ave.) or Bus 165 (Weston Road North from Wilson). Both buses stop at Avenue Road.

Looking at a well known composer and a not so well known one, of the same period. Scott has been a teacher, performer and writer on the Toronto early music scene for over 30 years. After many years at at The Royal Conservatory, he now has his own studio.

Rosamund Morley

"Mid to late 16th century settings of psalms"

Rosamund Morley, a viol player, is a Toronto native now living in Brooklyn, New York. She is a member of the Viol Consort "Parthenia" and a regular teacher at workshops all over the USA. She currently teaches viol in New Haven, Connecticut, at the Neighborhood Music School and for the Yale Collegium Musicum.

Mark is Associate Professor in the Department of Music at York University. He directs the York University Symphony Orchestra and the Baroque Ensemble. As a new workshop leader for Tempo, we look forward to welcoming him.

Avery McLean

"The Shortest Days and Longest Nights"

Seasonal music of North America for voice, recorders, and percussion, including traditional Canadian and American songs and carols and shapenote carols from the 18th-20th centuries. Avery is a founding member of the Aradia Baroque Ensemble and Recordare Ensemble, performer of recorder with the Toronto Masque Theatre, and has appeared with Arbor Oak Concerts, the Mississauga Symphony, Toronto Philharmonic, and the Toronto Consort.

Alison Melville
recorder, flute

Alison's career on recorders and historical flutes has taken her across North America and to New Zealand, Iceland, Japan and Europe. A member of Toronto Consort, Ensemble Polaris and the Bird Project, she also performs regularly with Tafelmusik, and has played with the Toronto Symphony, Aradia, Opera Atelier, Canadian Opera Company, Soundstreams and many others. Her playing can be heard on The Tudors, The Borgias, various films and over fifty CDs. See www.alisonmelville.com.

Frank has been a vocalist with the Toronto Consort, Tafelmusik Chamber Choir (founding member), Poculi Ludique Societas at the University of Toronto, and the Toronto Oratory; He is President of the Toronto Early Music Centre.

We're very pleased that our long-time friend Colin has agreed to take over the March session. Based in Toronto, Colin plays virtuoso recorder and clarinet with many groups including Tafelmusik, Toronto Consort, and the Scandinavian crossover band, Ensemble Polaris.

Elin Söderström
viola da gamba

As a Montreal-based viola da gamba player, Elin Söderström is active on both sides of the Atlantic. After studying at McGill University, she travelled to the Netherlands study with Wieland Kuijken. She joined the Dutch viol consort "The Spirit of Gambo" performing throughout Northern Europe, notably with Emma Kirkby. In Canada, as well as her work with Masques and Constantinople, Elin performs with Les Voix Humaines, the Toronto Consort, le Studio de Musique Ancienne and Les Boréades. Elin is renowned for her versatility, her stage presence and her expressive sound.

Marie Laurence Primeau
recorder & viola da gamba

A recorder and viola da gamba player and baroque dancer from Montreal, Marie Laurence is a member of the ensemble Flûte Alors! and has worked with Les Voix Humaines, Ensemble Masques, Les Idées Heureuses, Early Music Studio of Montreal, and Toronto Masque Theatre. She also teaches at CAMMAC Early Music Week.
