The History of Poland From the Tenth Century to the PresentRequired ReadingsThere are two required texts for the course:
These volumes are available for purchase at the University of Toronto Bookstore. They are also available on short-term loan at the Sigmund Samuel Library / Gerstein, 7 Kings College Circle. In addition, you are asked to purchase a course reader. The reader includes articles, excerpts from monographs, as well as primary source material. The readings from Davies and the readings contained in your course reader are listed on the syllabus under "required readings". Please note that some required readings are not included in the package of photocopies, and are only available on reserve at the Short-Term Loan facilities at Sigmund Samuel / Gerstein. Where a book or article is available on short-term loan, I have indicated so by including the designation "(SSTL)" after the reference. It will be assumed that you are familiar with all of the required readings. Keep this mind when it comes to class discussions and to the final exam. You will get more out of the class if you read as much as possible. It is not enough to simply read Davies!! Recommended ReadingsFor each class, I have also provided a list of recommended readings. These will take the student beyond the framework of the weeks required material. These lists are also intended to provide the student with a better sense of the range of literature that exists on any given topic. Students are strongly encouraged to choose at least one of these to supplement the weekly required readings. This is also the first place to start when beginning research for class essays. The lists of recommended readings are by no means comprehensive. All listed readings are in English. GeographyA solid grasp of the geography of east Central Europe is necessary to facilitate an understanding of the events and themes covered in the course. Students are strongly encouraged to consult the following atlas (on reserve at Sigmund Samuel / Gerstein):
The sections of the Magocsi atlas that correspond to a given lecture topic are provided under "recommended readings". Background ReadingFor additional background material on a given topic, consult the following texts:
