Next>The
Journal Donation Project
In the former socialist countries of Central and Eastern Europe,
the transition from a planned to a market economy has required a
complete transformation of higher education in economics, management,
and related fields. In these fields professional journals are the
primary means of scholarly communication, indispensable to both
teaching and research. We assist in the transformation by collecting
back issues of professional journals – donated primarily by
Canadian university professors, but also by other individuals, from
their own personal subscriptions – to fill requests from university
and research institute libraries in the region. We send these journals
either to our sister organization, Fundus Alapítvány
[Fundus Foundation] in Budapest for distribution to recipient libraries,
or directly to the libraries, if that is more efficient.
Libraries receive journals from us, free of charge, in three primary
ways:
- In response to our personal inquiries (usually an interview
with the head of the library), they send lists of back issues
which they would like to have to fill in gaps in their collections;
- from lists of available journals in inventory, they order single
issues or entire runs, which we supply on a first-come, first-served
basis; and
- we form partnership agreements with some libraries – particularly
in cases of newly-established faculties of economics and management
– to supply a basic journal collection, usually consisting
of 20- to 30-year runs of the core journals in the relevant fields.
We also intermediate in supplying other periodicals. For example,
we acquired a long run of The National Geographic for the Slovak
Economic Library in Bratislava and materials on Celtic Studies for
Kossuth Lajos University in Debrecen, Hungary.
