Historical Fields and Periods

Since historians almost always identify themselves in terms of fields, geographic or thematic, this section is intended to present a range of online resources divided into familiar categories. The disparities between fields, in terms of how far they have been developed, is marked. The United States, Canada, Europe (especially Germany), Africa, Australia, the Medieval period, and several special interest topics are particularly well served, while Asia and South America are virtually absent. At either end of the spectrum, a field-based collection of resources will be incomplete, but its usefulness lies in providing the electronic equivalent of a selective literature survey. These links can fruitfully serve as points of departure, but browsers are encouraged to augment this with more specifically defined searches using the indexes and search tools outlined elsewhere.
