Phonetics
Please pay close attention to the "Oscar" and the
"English consonant" charts in the Appendices of your book.
What you need to know for the test:
- Places and manners of
articulation: describe each (you will not be examined on
"affricates").

English consonants: learn the transcription symbol for each, as well as
the place and manner of articulation of each.
It may help to see some explanatory slides.
- Identify, in terms of its
place and manner of articulation, the first (or last) sound of selected
words. (Try: cat, psychology, gnome, shaking.)
- Read all the phonetic symbols
that we introduced. (See the consonant chart in the Appendix of your
book.)
What you need NOT know for the test:
- How to transcribe
phonetically.
- The place and manner of
articulation of English vowels.
- The place, manner of
articulation and transcription symbol of consonants or vowels not used in
English.
- Trancription symbols from IPA
or other transcription systems not used in class.
Check the "last updated"
item at the bottom of the screen. If the date given there predates the lecture,
expect the questions to be changed AT LEAST ONCE before the next test or exam.
Check again before the test to see what the final version is.
Please note: the questions cover topics that might be on the test or the
examination. However, the relevant questions on the test or the exam may be
worded quite differently, or may appear in multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank,
etc. form.
