Lesson One

Welcome to the

HTML Hustle

The lessons assume some familiarity with using browsers and handling files.

  • You know how to navigate.
  • You know how to save files.
  • You know about text only or ascii files.

You will find the basic template for an html document at
http://www.chass.utoronto.ca:8080/~lachance/template

It look's like the one to your right >>>

It contains the elements that are necessary for every html file.

Look over the template.
Notice how the principle of delimitation structures an HTML document?

<html>
<head>
<title>

</title>
</head>
<body>

</body>
</html>

First: Mind your Brackets

Note the angled brackets < >

The secret is to open < and close >
Unless all your sets are paired properly your html will "break".
<html>
<head>
<title>

</title>
</head>
<body>

</body>
</html>

Second: Slash to End

The open/close principle applies to elements.
Proper closing of elements requires a slash. On/off.

<html> begins the file </html> ends the file

The general form is

<xyz> ... </xyz>
<html>
<head>
<title>

< / title>
</head>
<body>

</body>
</html>

YOU TRY

Try.
Copy the template.
Call the template up in a wordprocessor.
Add text between

<title> TEXT </title>

and between

<body> MORE TEXT</body>

Save as an ascii or text only file.

Pop your first html into a browser

View the results.

<html>
<head>
<title>

TEXT

</ title>
</head>
<body>

MORE TEXT
MORE TEXT

</body>
</html>
