A Guide to Win 95

  1. Turning the computer on  and, if necessary, turn the monitor on.

  2.  Turning the computer off         
    Press    and  glide mouse to the right  to "Shut
    Down". Make sure that there is a "Shut Down", then click on

    N.B.
    Wait until you get the "It is safe to turn off computer" message before turning the machine down.

  4. Getting around: The Mouse [Image of Mouse] 

    1. How it works:  Point and click: roll mouse to desired location, point, and click

    2. Buttons:
       a.  Mouse Left Button  used all the time to click and "activate" some command
                    One Click: simply highlights or "selects" an item
                     Double Click: executes a command, launches a program.
                         Eg. double clicking on an icon will launch that particular program; (double clicking on                                   a word will highlight word).

        b.  Mouse Right Button   Menu prompt of selected item.
                  Select with LMB, then click ONLY ONCE with RIGHT mouse button
                       
    Eg. go to an image and screen and click right mouse button once, do the same for text, and                                       now for a blank spot on screen; go to an icon on desktop and click right mouse key)

         c. Pointers:

    2. Glide the mouse upwards  to PROGRAMS
    3. Glide the mouse to the right   to application desired
    4. Continue to glide the mouse to the right  to see what is contained in an application           folder ...

  7. How to . . . ?
    1. Drag: click on item with LMB, hold, and glide in desired direction

    2. Highlight: go to desidered item, point to it with mouse, click with LMB, hold and drag

    3. Find out info about an icon or feature: rest the mouse pointer on it until window appears

    4. Minimizing, maximizing, and exiting

    5. Scrolling:
      Click on the arrow to move in the desidered direction or move slide bar (by dragging it) in desidered direction


    6. Hot Keys  

      1. ALT + TAB  
        takes your from one open program to the next (works like multitasking and tabs)
      2. CTRL + X  
        (copy [remember you must first HIGHLIGHT something by clicking and dragging if necessary]
      3. CTRL + V
        (pastes what has been copied by CTRL + X)
      4. CTRL + Z
        (undoes whatever your last command was, ie., if you just deleted a word, press CTRL + Z and it will re-appear)

    7. Cutting & Pasting: (v. above CTRL + X  & CTRL + V )

    8. Recycle Bin
      Either drag and drop item in bin , or highlight it and press DEL on keyboard

    9. Multitasking: Working with multiple programs at same time (tabwin)


      From anywhere in Win 95, to go another application that is still open, simply click on desidered tab (can do the same with  ALT + TAB). (Remember that  brings it back to the TAB state).


  8. Understanding the File Management Structure
    1. Files:
      Every type of information is saved in a file. Each file has a name and an ending or extension preceded by a dot  (Eg. test.doc [test is the name and .doc is the extension that tells us what type of file it is (.doc is a document, .gif is a type of graphics file, .html is a file used with a browser)]).

      Highlight FILE   NEW   FOLDER and type in name

    4. How to rename a directory
      Highlight desired folder , click RMB and scroll to RENAME 

    5. How to delete a directory
      Highlight desired folder, click RMB and scroll to DELETE 

    6. Select multiple files
      Holding CTRL key down, highlight (click with LMB) as many files as needed

      click on BOOKMARK and click on  ADD

    4. Possible Errors:
      1. File Not Found: "The requested URL /~ngargano/guide.html was not found on this server".

    5. Mail
      1. Get Mail  
        Click on  (bottom, right-hand of Netscape screen)

      2. Reply  (Answers an incoming mail)

      3. Forward (Send  a copy mail to someone )

      4. Address Book (from menu item WINDOW, go to ADDRESS BOOK)


         

      5. Send  (click on this icon to email)
