  • Line numbers: line or lines, not ll, l, v, vv, and only when necessary for clarity
  • Page nos.: (123) not (p. 123), except where necessary to avoid confusion.

Capitals:

Greek and Latin:

  • Used for proper names and adjectival forms of proper names
  • Used for first word in titles

French:

  • Used for all words in names of institutions

Ellipsis dots:

Normally . . . inside a quotation, but use . . . . :

  • before the initial capital of new sentence in the quoted text, and
  • when the quotation ends with . . . at the end of the sentence of the surrounding text which itself ends in .
  • Example: The text says "unlikely . . . . Exactly why is . . . unclear . . . ."

Please note that quotations need to make grammatical sense.

Epigraphical and papyrological editorial symbols:

Phoenix uses the standard epigraphical and papyrological symbols when citing inscriptions and papyri. The Editor will check these in final proof-reading.

Equal sign:

Use " = " between two fragments in different editions, not ":"

Footnotes:

  • Begin with capital letters unless first word is in Greek or Latin (and not a proper name)
  • An unnumbered note before note 1 may contain acknowledgments.
  • Cross-references to notes always "n. #" in footnotes, "note #" in text

Greek:

  • Iota adscript may be used in reproductions (a) of inscriptions or papyri, (b) of specifically cited editions of literary texts. When the diphthong takes an accent it goes on the adscript.
  • A grave at the end of Greek matter is changed to an acute, unless it is on a word which has been an item of discussion.

In roman:

  • ca, cf., e.g., etc., vs.
  • names of Greek letters
  • OCT, LSJ, Souda (preferred to Suda or Suidas)

Papyrus frags. in form POxy

Parentheses:

  • Use square brackets inside parentheses
  • Expand abbreviations only with square brackets (e.g., T[emple] of Apollo, not T(emple)).
  • But note different epigraphic & papyrological convention.

Possessives of names:

  • ending in s: add 's for modern names, just ' for ancient names
  • ending in z or x: add 's
  • Examples: Ajax's, Aias', Descartes's, Demosthenes'

Quotations:

  • Greek and Latin: no quotation marks, Latin in italics.
  • Modern languages: roman in quotes or offset, italic if a word or phrase is used in an English sentence.
  • Punctuation: comma and period inside ", the rest outside.

References:

Form of references as in "Notes to Contributors" (Phoenix 49 [1995] 1-2). Refer to recent issues of the journal for examples of new style (starting with 50.1). However, in the review section we still use the old style: author, Title ( place year) p.nos. or author, "article title," Journal vol.no. (year) p.nos.

Roman numerals:

  • Use for book pages (lower case)
  • Use arabic numerals for volume numbers except inscription collections: CIL, FdeD, IdeD, IG, SEG, ICret and: ANRW, CLA, TLL
  • When a volume number is followed by fascicule or part number, leave a space before the section/inscription/page number: IG XII.1 6793.13, ANRW II.1 32.3 123.34.

Semi-colons: used to separate successive references when they have internal commas, otherwise use commas.

Small caps:

  • MSS, III (dynastic notation, regal and civilian)
  • ND, NS, NF, sections in LSJ, B.C., A.D., coin legends

"Stephanus" pages/sections:

  • Use lower case letters for sections followed immediately by line number inside section: 365b2
  • If both book/chapter and Stephanus page are given, leave space between: EN 4.3 365b2

Transliteration:

Any consistent system allowed; no diacriticals in transliterated Greek. The titles of modern Greek books and articles, like those of books and articles with ancient Greek in them, keep their Greek, but titles of ancient Greek books and modern Greek authors and journals appear in Roman script.
