is recruiting class representatives to announce ECO events in class (ours
could be posted to the list-serve or newsgroup), act as liason between
ECO and the class, and help with evaluation of the course at the end of
the session. If interested in serving in this capacity for LO401 (ECO100_online),
print out this form and leave it with Reception,
150 St. George St., South House. If you have any questions about this please
send them to the ECO course organization at eco_council@hotmail.com or
visit them at SS3045. They also have a web site at
http://connect.to/eco
2 October 2000
The ECO100 aid centre schedule has

anything specific to the online course should be taken up with a tutor
assigned specifically to this section (Thursday 6 to 8).
1 October 2000
Assignment #1 is available

time allotment for this course reviewing the first three topics and working
the exercises in this assignment. Please do this on your own. Any questions
or difficulties will be taken up at the Workshop Thursday (see schedule
for place and time). Following the workshop, solutions and any other material
arising from the workshop session will be posted here. The aid centre session
Thursday is cancelled because of the workshop. The workshop will be conducted

but a tutor for this online section (L0401), Mr. Vladimir Tiagi, has been
appointed and will be available at the aid centre on Thursdays from 6 to
8pm.
15 September 2000
We are in the process of arranging
hours for the on-campus ECO100 aid centre and getting teaching assistants
appointed. I hope to be able to announce sometime next week how you can
go about getting help, if you need it, both on campus and online with the
course content. We are also trying to finalize the place and time for the
on-campus Workshop scheduled for the first week in October. Next week's
topic will be posted sometime on the weekend.
11 September 2000
The test dates shown in the Schedule
for ECO100Y L0401are now confirmed. The three term tests will be written
on campus on Monday, November 6, Monday February 5, and Monday March 26.
All will be 90 minute multiple-choice quizzes beginning shortly after 6pm
on the dates indicated. Please mark your calendars and make any necessary
arrangements accordingly. The on-campus locations will be announced prior
to the test dates. Anyone missing a test must submit suitable medical or
other documentation within ONE week of the missed test. See the Arts and
Science Calendar or student handbook for details concerning these regulations.
Arrangements for the "all purpose" make-up test to be held next April will
be announced later in the Spring Term.
8 September 2000
The course begins as scheduled next
week. Please work through Topic 1 during the week beginning 11 September.
This means reading (very carefully) the hypertext notes for Topic 1, viewing
and listening to the two parts of the first online lecture, doing the online
quiz for Topic 1, working through the simple problem for this topic, and
posting any comments you might have on the discussion question to the course
newsgroup. (Let's hope someone will take the lead and break the ice on
the latter!) Do not delay. The work will begin to pile up over the next
few weeks.
There are no on-campus meetings scheduled
until the first (optional) assignment/workshop session at the beginning
of October. You will be expected to begin work on your own initiative.
If you have not signed on to the course list-serve please do so now so
that you will receive regular reminders of how you should be moving through
the course content.
Once again, let's point out that
one advantage of taking an online version of the course is that you will
have a lot of flexibility in managing the time you devote to the work scheduled
to be covered each week. But be warned that experience with online courses
shows that the major problem students have with them is just this! Especially
when taken in conjunction with on-campus courses and when outside employment
is involved, there is a natural tendency to put off working on the online
course in order to keep up with other, seemingly more "pressing", demands
on one's time. So try to set aside a certain amount of time each week for
ECO100_online. How much time? Hard to say. You should have a better idea
after the first few weeks. If you get into difficulties, be sure to contact
me by email!
