The Coffee Cup: A Locus of Meaning
The coffee ritual is elaborate and complicated in today's society. On the one hand we drink our cup of coffee leisurely while dining out and reading the newspaper. At times we drink our coffee at home in a favourite mug. We want a "quick fix" during the course of the day and grab a cup in a "coffee drive-thru". We run into a donut shop on the corner, in a subway station, or an office building and demand a "double-double" on our way to work. We drink a cup among friends or family after a meal, or on the street between destinations. We choose to "meet [others] for a cup of coffee," and during the course of a day we take a "coffee break". In each case the meanings of the ritual become ambiguous and multifarious.
