Facilitated Study Groups (FSG)

Introduction to FSG

This year, SLUGS is pleased to offer Facilitated Study Groups for LIN100 students. Are you taking LIN100 and looking to practice what you've learned and make friends with your classmates? Or are you an upper-year linguistics student looking for a fun way to get involved and give back to the undergraduate linguistics community? Keep reading for more updates on when these sessions will be held and how you can get involved!

Facilitated Study Groups (FSG) are hour-long learning activity sessions for LIN100 students, where upper-year undergraduate linguistics facilitators host a series of fun games related to LIN100 units. For example, a week of FSG sessions will be held after the phonetics unit, where students might play games such as IPA Jeopardy (name that IPA segment!), a "one of these segments is not like the others" game, or a matching-words-to-vowels game.

We're currently looking for enthusiastic upper-year linguistics students to help make these sessions a huge success! Time commitment is flexible, and volunteers will receive a Recognition of Service certificate from the department.

To get involved, please fill out an application form! You will have to sign up for an interview before you are accepted for hosting FSG sessions. If you are only interested in hosting Winter FSG sessions, wait for us to email you in January about interviews.

If you are interested in hosting a Phonetics, Phonology or Morphology/Morphophonology FSG session, you must sign up for an interview with SLUGS President-External Angie Rajani and SLUGS Events Coordinator Kinza Mahoon. Interview times are for either Monday September 22nd between 1-4 PM and Thursday September 25th between 12-3 PM.
