Term papers are due at the penultimate class, April 7, 2009 in class. Late papers will be penalized three percentage points for every day they are late up to April 13. No paper will be accepted after April 13, 2009. Papers are to be 10-12 pages, typed, double spaced, and in English. Papers are to be written on topics approved by the instructor. Papers may be written on any one of the following topics, which involve additional reading, beyond what was required of everyone. The additional reading is to be found in the library. Your paper need not be based on additional reading, but this will be considered in your favor.
1. Examine and analyze the views of Mykola Khvylovy regarding the status and development of Ukrainian literature as they are expressed in his essays collected in: Mykola Khvylovy, The Cultural Renaissance in Ukraine: Polemical Pamphlets, 1925-1926, Edmonton: Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, 1986. This book is available from the Bookroom.
2. Examine the presentation of social conflict in Ivan Franko's Boa Constrictor. How is his presentation different from Ivan Nechui-Levyts'kyi's in Mykola Dzheria.
3. Using any two novels by Oles' Honchar, examine this author's presentation of the conflict between social institutions and the individual, particularly in the area of cultural values.
4. Examine the influence of modernism in Ukrainian literature. Include at least three authors in your discussion. You may choose poetry, prose or other genres, or a combination of genres. You may choose to compare modernist works with works from an earlier period.
5. Yuri Andrukhovych is part of a wave of Ukrainian culture which seems to focus on debunking every preconceived notion of a cultural or social stability or order in Ukraine. Compare Andrukhovych's Recreations and the works contained in the anthology From Three Worlds with the other works we have read in the course. In particular, compare them to the works of Ukrainian modernism of the earlier part of the 20th century.
6. If you read Ukrainian, select a book-length work of contemporary Ukrainian literature and write an essay about it. For example, you might want to write about Serhii Zhadan, Irena Karpa, Taras Prokhasko, etc.
7. Select your own topic in consultation with the instructor.
